Ed raises cattle, hay, wheat and other small grains. This is his 8th year to raise sunflowers. The first year he raised oil seeds and he was somewhat successful. This year his seeds will become snacks for David's brand of sunflower seeds.

He has about 100 head of mixed breeding cows, about four or five cooperative bulls -- depending on the day or night -- and 99 calves, ready to go to pasture. He took over the family farm from his parents in the years following his high school graduation in 1975. He purchased the home place in 1983 and followed up with another 1.5 sections in 1990 and, finally, 2.5 sections in 2001. For this reason, he is on very good terms with loan officers at two local banks.

He enjoys playing basketball twice a week in the late fall, winter and early spring, when he's not in the field. In the summer, he loves to ride his Honda Gold Wing down country highways, exploring new territory. This year, he plans to add a new twist with a GPS unit and geocaching. In his home office, Ed likes investing in mutual funds and watches the stock market rise and fall.
